Fisheating Creek Florida Trails

Fisheating Creek Sub-Chapter of the Florida Trail Association does not hold regular monthly meetings during the summer months, but we do have activities all year.

Monthly Meetings

Hendry Glades Audubon meets at the Hendry County Extension Service in the Dallas Townsend Building located at 1085 Pratt Blvd. in LaBelle on the 3rd Monday of each month. In February we will meet the 2nd Monday due to Presidents Day.

About: These 54,000 acres preserve protects the largest remaining stretch of Florida dry prairie, home to an array of endangered plants and animals. While driving the five-mile-long road into the preserve, visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of grasslands reminiscent of the Great Plains of the Midwest.

Full Moon Hike

Welcome to Fall, Everyone! Time to hike!
 Our first outing will be held on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 
Full Moon Hike at Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area (Fort Center area). Hope to see sunflowers before dusk. Carpool from Barron Park, leaving at 3:30pm, or meet on site at 4:30pm.
 Directions: US 27 in Moore Haven, follow SR 78 east to Lakeport. Look for the turnoff for Banana Grove Road on the north side of the road, between two branches of Fisheating Creek. There is a sign at the entrance “Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area.” Follow the unpaved road for about a mile to reach the trailhead parking area on the left.
Bring water, flashlights, bug spray, and snacks

Monthly Meeting

Dr. Jerome "Jerry" Jackson will present "Soccer, Shopping Centers, and Florida's Loggerhead Shrikes: An Accidental Conservation Success Story.

Dr. Jackson is recognized as the world's expert on the ivory-billed woodpecker. The winner of the 2004 Chandler Robbins Education and Conservation Award from the American Birding Association Jackson is the former Whitaker Eminent Scholar in Science at Florida Gulf Coast University. Dr. Jackson takes you through your backyard, and Southwest Florida's beaches, swamps and preserves to learn bout "The Wild Things" on his daily public radio program.

In this presentation, he will introduce the behavior and ecology of Loggerhead Shrikes whose populations in Florida appear to be doing well, while those elsewhere are declining and endangered. What factors have influenced their success here? How can we build on these successes to further help this fascinating species?

Backpacking at Hickory Hammock

BACKPACKING AT HICKORY HAMMOCK, Highlands County
When: Saturday/Sunday, November 11-12
 Meet at Barron Park at 7:30a.m. or Hickory Hammock at 8:30a.m.
Bring what you need to spend the night at the primitive campsite, including water for both days.

 The original trailhead is a dirt parking area along US 98 west of the Kissimmee River, 1 mile west of the Istokpoga Canal, and 27 miles west of the junction of SR 70 and US 98 in Okeechobee. It’s where the 0.2 mile blue-blazed trail starts.

Nov. 19-24

26th Annual Big "O" Hike

The 26th annual Big “O” hike will be held from November 19 to November 24, 2017. There will be six days of hiking around or near Lake Okeechobee. Camping and afternoon activities will be centered at the KOA Kampground in Okeechobee, FL with shared daily transportation from the campgrounds to the beginning of each day’s hike. The first 25 Big “O”s included approximately 73,500 miles of individual hiking, great friendships, fabulous afternoons in relaxing camaraderie, some sunburn, chattering teeth, and more than a few blisters.  Make your plans now to help us celebrate our 26th anniversary Thanksgiving week, November 19 -24,2017, with hikes on the dikes.
